Jack Morton goes olive green

Jack Morton has undertaken a major advancement in our efforts to go green - we've named our initiative: Olive

I'm kidding, of course, we have been up to a lot and have plenty more to do. But what's in a name? Well, it's a nice word, it reflects our unique culture and perspective on the world and it just makes things sound more official. Plus Olive contains the word "live" - which can be understood two ways...live as in live experiences, what we are all about, and live as in helping the planet live a bit longer.

This company and our industry have a long way to go. My colleague Eric Samuelson recently forwarded an alarming statistic...

"The Event and Tradeshow industry is the second largest producer of solid waste in the United States. Events are preceded only by the construction and demolition industry. A two-day event can produce as much waste as a family of 4 could produce in 15 years." (epa.gov)

That is...shocking. Startling. We are already passionately behind this initiative, but reading that adds a whole lot of fuel to my fire.

Anyway I don't want to make this an overly long post. Just wanted to mention Olive and also that I'm looking forward to the Green Event Summit starting on June 12th. If you are going to be there drop me a line and let's plan to talk green events.

I am hoping the event really helps to articulate the compelling business need around producing events that are green. I think we have the community/social willpower, we now need the business imperative to make it a reality. I'll try to report back here after the event.

We'll be at the conference as well on the 12-13th. There is a ton of work for all of us to work out solutions. The cost and benefit equation is swinging to green, but not as fast as we would like. Hope to see you in SF.
